Presentation. April 8, 2024.
John re-read his talk of 1985, “In Search of Edward Bouchet,” now published in the anthology, Edward Bouchet, the First African-American Doctorate, updating his original presentation with material from this anthology, David Blight’s, Yale and Slavery, and Manisha Sinha’s, The Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic. Bouchet, relatively unknown 40 years ago, is now heralded internationally.  John described the obstacles Bouchet  confronted and his accomplishments despite them during the “brief shining moment” of Reconstruction when American offered opportunity and then violently withdrew that offer.
