Zephyrs

(1992) 5:00
(Wind band - pc,213 bcl 1/2atb sx/222euph1/5perc)
Commissioned by the Tiverton Middle School Band, Paul Anderson, Music Director, and the Rhode Island Music Educators Association
Level: Middle school/high school

Zephyrs tells the tale of Hurricane Bob, which swept through the town of Tiverton, RI, in the fall of 1991. This one-movement three-part piece is subdivided: Breezes-a gentle modal overlapping collection of simple melodies evokes images of leaves blown by the breezes, with swirling dust and debris added in as the wind gains in strength; Bells-the winds become stronger and the buoys at sea rock and peal; Bob - whirling brassy but simple melodies give way to a sustained static chord, with crystal glasses - the musicians speak at the end - "Soon, this storm will stop."
